Boys Trip 2009 - Beartooth Range - Part Three

Still more pictures...

Once in camp, we bundled up against the cold afternoon rain..

And once it stopped, got out and did some fishing.

Our dinner needed to simmer, but our stoves weren't cooperating. Some ingenuity and a couple of forked sticks elevated the pot over the stove so it simmered.

The river was nice and calm the next morning...

And we broke camp and headed out.

Found a camp a little bit off trail...

Between two lakes up on a bluff (almost in the center of this photo.)

Had a little tarp time...

And some fishing time.

Actually got some fish this time.

Goot eatin' there.

To be continued...

Boys Trip 2009 - Beartooth Range - Part Two

More pictures...

Finally at the trailhead, we sort out gear...

Get packed up...

And get on the trail.

Our first campsite is near Fox Lake -

Where we establish a pattern: Get a tarp strung up for rain protection (and tents up)...

Then worry about water, dinner and general hanging around the campfire.

The next day is all about climbing. We climb out of Fox Lake, follow a stream for awhile...

Climb some more...

Through a thunderstorm...

And eventually find a good spot to camp.

Another installment later...

Boyz Trip 2009 - Beartooth Range - Part One

I have a group of friends that does a yearly backpacking/rafting/kayaking or whatever outdoors trip they call the "Boyz Trip." The last time I got to go on it was a couple years ago, when the did a big kayak trip to Alaska. This year ended up being a backpacking trip, which always seem to be my favorites, and the location was the Beartooth Range in southern Montana, just north of Yellowstone.

I could type pages and pages of description, but I'm going to rely on pictures to tell the story for me:

Met up in Portland and drove to Montana in a van and an ambulance that is registered as an RV, which means...

It can have a kegorator in the back.

Camped outside Bozeman...

Then headed into Bozeman to pick up people from the airport and do grocery shopping. Whole huge story here about lost luggage and missed flights, but eventually we all got organized and headed toward the trailhead.

Ambulance broke down. After much iPhoning, we located someone who could fix it while we were hiking, so we...

Lashed our gear to the roof of the van and...

All piled into the back.

Organized vehicle repair and shuttling with awesome garage in Gardiner, MT...

And continued on to our trailhead.

More later...

Dreamin In Code

Dreaming in Code: Two Dozen Programmers, Three Years, 4,732 Bugs, and One Quest for Transcendent Software Dreaming in Code: Two Dozen Programmers, Three Years, 4,732 Bugs, and One Quest for Transcendent Software by Scott Rosenberg

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Dreaming in Code is two things: It's the story of the development of an open-source program called Chandler, through many iterations and troubles, and it's also the story of why software is so hard to write. Clearly written and not too technical, it made me want to learn more about how people write the software that becomes so much a part of our lives.

How To Rob An Armored Car

How to Rob an Armored Car How to Rob an Armored Car by Iain Levison

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was a good example of the "inept-but-lucky criminal" genre, something like a Guy Ritchie movie but taking place in depressed Pennsylvania. Three stoner friends fumble their way through their first forays into criminality, to varying degrees of success.

Hold The Enlightenment

Hold the Enlightenment Hold the Enlightenment by Tim Cahill

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
A fairly fun collection of travel essays from Tim Cahill, ranging from his home in Montana to Australia to South Africa to Turkey. Interesting, but didn't really strike a chord with me.
