Mysterious Montague

The Mysterious Montague: A True Tale of Hollywood, Golf, and Armed Robbery The Mysterious Montague: A True Tale of Hollywood, Golf, and Armed Robbery by Leigh Montville

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
Nice combination of golf book, Hollywood heyday of the 1930s, and historical true crime a la Erik Larson's Devil in the White City. Interesting coverage of post-prohibition celebrity trial.

There is so much we do not know about the start and end of prohibition. It just occurred to me how little is generally known about the western counties of Virginia forming their own state during the Civil War, and how that all happened. What was the reaction in the rest of Virginia (who supplied many soldiers to the CSA and held its capital), and the debates in the state legislature leading up to that eventual event. Was there debate in Congress about recognizing WV as a state, and what does that tell us now about attempts for parts of existing states to form their own state and get it recognized by Congress.
